CONTACT INFO

3-14-16 - Due to the recent flooding of Saint Joseph Abbey, we currently can't take requests for guests. Please check back here before calling the monastery. We will let the community know as soon as possible when rooms will be ready again.

Abbeys are never wanting for guests; we welcome them as we might welcome Christ. Please contact our guest master to make a reservation.

GUEST NOTES

The monastery has a limited number of guest rooms for men only. Female guests and group requests may contact the Christian Life Center to reserve a room(s).

Guests are invited to join the monastic community in choir for communal prayer by taking a place in the stalls nearest the nave. We ask that you be sensitive to blending with the monks when singing or reciting.

Guests are free to walk about the grounds, however, we ask that you do not go above the first floor in the monastery or enter the seminary buildings.

Please dress appropriately when attending communal prayer, Eucharist, and meals. Shorts and bare feet are not appropriate in the church, monastic dining hall, or monastery except when going to or returning from exercise.

Silence for the purpose of prayer and reflection is observed every morning until after breakfast. We also observe silence on Friday from Vespers until after breakfast on Saturday. Please try to be on time for meals and take a place at the guest table. All meals are taken in silence except for lunch and supper on Sundays and Solemnities.

Guests are welcome to help themselves to coffee and a newspaper in the guest lounge. There is also a laptop computer available with an internet connection.

The use of tobacco and alcohol is not allowed in monastery buildings.

We recommend scheduling your stay between Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon or Tuesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon.

GUIDELINES FOR GUESTS

We are happy to share our monastic life with you during your visit. We ask that you abide by the following:

Guests are free to walk the grounds in front of the monastery, however, we ask that you limit yourself to the guest wing and guest lounge and that you do not enter the seminary buildings. Please do not enter the monastic community room or go above the first floor of the monastery unless you have been housed there.

Only monks and registered guests are allowed past the lobby. If you are expecting a visitor, please arrange to meet him or her in the lobby.

Guests are invited to join the monastic community in choir for communal prayer by taking a place in the stalls nearest the nave (body of the church). We ask that you be sensitive to blending with the monks when singing or reciting. Please do not bring cell phones into the Abbey church or monastic refectory.

Please dress appropriately (long pants, shirt, shoes, and socks) when attending the Divine Office, Mass, and meals. Shorts and bare feet are not appropriate in the church, in the monastic refectory (dining room), or in the monastery except when going to or returning from outdoor exercise. Please be in the church at least five minutes before the scheduled time so that your prayer books may be set for you.

If you are a guest of the monastery, please eat in the monastic refectory. Likewise, if you are a guest of the seminary, please eat in the seminary refectory.

Please be on time for meals and take a place at the guest table. All meals are taken in silence except for lunch and supper on Sunday and Solemnities. Breakfast is somewhat informal and you may simply leave when you are finished. Lunch and supper are more formal and we enter and exit the refectory together. The abbot or superior will conclude each meal with grace after meals.

Guests may be invited by the guestmaster in consultation with the abbot or prior to the monastic community recreation after supper. Please do not attend recreation unless you have been invited. If you are invited to come to our recreation, please limit yourself to the community room and do not enter the mail room / game room. That space is reserved for monks only.

Silence, for the purpose of prayer and reflection, is observed every morning until after breakfast, when proceeding to and from the church, and on Friday from Vespers until after breakfast on Saturday. Silence is also observed on statio line prior to the afternoon and evening meals. Since the monastic community lines up according to seniority on statio line, guests are asked stand at the end of the line farthest away from the refectory door.

The guest lounge is provided with coffee supplies and a newspaper.

Smoking and the use of alcoholic beverages are not permitted in any of the buildings.

No pets are allowed in the monastery.

To make a local phone call from your room, dial "9" and then the number. To reach an in-house extension, dial the extension number of the person you are trying to reach or call the porter's office (ext. 1000) and ask for your call to be transferred to that person.

A flashing light on your phone indicates that you have a voice message. To retrieve the message, press the blinking button and enter the pass code "1111" when prompted. Follow the instructions to retrieve, save, send, or delete the message.

If you have any questions or need some assistance, please contact the guestmaster or the porter on duty at the front entrance of the monastery.

Before you depart, please strip the bed and put all used sheets into your pillowcase and place them in the bathroom. Hang all wet towels on the towel bars to dry. Please place all used soap, wrappers, cups, and trash into the waste basket and put the trash bag in the bathroom. Replace the liner with the new plastic bag provided.

Thank you, and we, the monks of Saint Joseph Abbey, hope you have a pleasant stay with us.
