Saint Joseph Abbey + Seminary College breaks ground on first new building in 50 years

On Saturday, Feb. 27, Saint Joseph Abbey + Seminary College broke ground on its first new building in more than half a century, the Pere Rouquette Library. Once completed, the three-story library, named after Father Adrien Rouquette, the first native-born Louisianian to be ordained to the priesthood, will encompass approximately 18,000 square feet.

Saint Joseph community remembers Fr. William John MacCandless, O.S.B.

Father William John MacCandless, O.S.B., a monk of Saint Joseph Abbey, died on Christmas Day at the monastery at Saint Benedict, LA. A native of New Orleans, he was born on 7 July 1930. He was a model of monastic observance to his brothers, a gentle and good-humored member of the community, much sought as a spiritual director and confessor.

Knights of Columbus make generous donation to seminarian mission fund

Thanks to a generous $20,000 donation from the Knights of Columbus Louisiana State Council, Saint Joseph Seminary College’s mission immersion program, which brings seminarians to live and work alongside an underprivileged community in Guatemala, has received the support that will continue to make these trips possible for years to come.

Saint Joseph Community remembers Brother Anselm Hollingsworth, O.S.B.

Brother Anselm Hollingsworth, O.S.B., who entered Saint Joseph Abbey and made profession as a monk in 1960, was known to many visitors over the years as the Abbey's beloved principal porter. He was a self-taught pianist, the resident climatological observer and an avid naturist. He was 82.

Local seminary professors receive grants to promote scientific literacy among seminarians

The Science in Seminaries Initiative at John Carroll University has awarded a $10,000 grant to Saint Joseph Seminary College (SJSC) and another to Notre Dame Seminary (NDS) for a collaborative effort that will join seminary professors from both institutions with expert scientists in instructing seminarians about how faith, philosophy and science intersect at the dawn of the human species.
