THE NAME-THE-MONK-SOAP CONTEST WINNER IS. . . BR ANDREW
Please, before you start rioting, let us explain. . .
When we introduced our line of artisanal soaps from Br. Andrew, we held a soap-naming contest. Around the monastery, we just called it monk soap, which is how Br. Andrew referred to it when he talked about it.
We received more than 100 replies, serious and funny, like, Sapo, Holy Moly Soap, Bar Nun, St. Joe's Brick Soap. . . the entire list is below, if you'd like to see it. When it came down to it, though, we found that people just called it what it is: monk soap. We thought it was wonderfully simple, clear and pure: Clean, you might say.
It looked great graphically, too. We joined the two words into one and capitalized it, using the same font and placement under the logo that we use for the other abbey apostolates. This was important, since one benefit of the soap is to promote the abbey to the public and outside of our region. We also made sure it said "Saint Joseph Abbey" below MONKSOAP.
Br. Andrew has been caught a little by surprise with the response. The New Orleans Times-Picayune featured MONKSOAP as one of their Christmas picks, and a local magazine featured it in their Christmas gift catalogue. With two small crock pots and four molds, the most he can make is 100 bars a day, and he can barely keep up with demand. These days, he says, "It's a small operation, but brother, business is booming!" He thinks it might slow down after Christmas, but we all believe that's his way of being humble, and demand is only going to rise. So if anyone wants to donate a large stainless-steel kettle, please call the development office at 985 867-2242. It would really help him meet his orders.
