Saint Joseph Abbey Hosts Free Organ Performance

On Sunday, October 10th at 3 p.m., organist Matthew Buller will perform at Saint Joseph Abbey Church, located at 75376 River Road in Covington. The organ concert is free and open to the public. Buller, a two-time graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio, is Organist for Saint Joseph Seminary College and Assistant Organist for the Saint Joseph Abbey monastic community.

A native of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Buller began his music studies in piano at the age of nine and organ at 12. In 2007, after only one year of organ studies, he began his church music career by playing the organ voluntarily at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Lake Charles.

Prior to moving to Ohio in 2012, Buller held numerous positions around Lake Charles, including Assistant Organist at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and Assistant Choirmaster at St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church. From 2012 until 2017, Matthew served as organist at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lakewood, Ohio. From there, he served as the full-time Director of Music and Liturgy at Holy Family Catholic Church in Parma, Ohio, until 2019.

In May 2017, Matthew graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance and a Master of Music in Organ and Historic Performance. In May 2019, he subsequently earned his Artist Diploma in Organ Performance, also from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

During his undergraduate years, he was chosen by the organ faculty to represent the department at the Danenberg Honors Recital and, in January 2016, to perform the Songsun Lee Memorial Concert on the Lively-Fulcher organ at the Vero Beach Community Church in Florida. He served on the faculty of the Oberlin Summer Organ Academy in 2017 and 2018 and also served as Professor James David Christie’s teaching assistant as part of his Artist Diploma studies during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Buller has performed extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, and France. He won the 2015 Dallas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and was a finalist in the Southwest Region of the American Guild of Organists during the same year.

In addition to the Abbey and Seminary College, Buller is also organist at St. Luke The Evangelist Parish in Slidell, Louisiana.
