Over the 50 years I have taught painting, I have found that the main issue, and the hardest thing to learn, is to control the paint.

The painting all of a sudden is too thick and wet, or sticky and drying too quickly, making it impossible to blend. Drawing problems occur when using the wrong brush, or not being attuned to the edges of the forms, or what the light is doing in the reference image.

Things like paint viscosity, controlling drying time, which brushes to use for which effect, awareness of chiaroscuro, layering color, when to clean your brush or use the infused color, and controlling edges will be covered.

For oil painting, it's about layering fat over lean in order to keep working. In acrylic, it's also about layering, but the opposite issue is the concern: keeping the paint wet enough to allow it to blend.

Specific products as well as techniques will be demonstrated and discussed.
