OVERNIGHT GUESTS

“All guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ.”

- Rule of Saint Benedict, Chapter 53

Limited Number of Rooms in Monastery Available for Overnight Male Guests

Saint Joseph Abbey welcomes guests as we might welcome Christ, just as Benedict told his monks to do in the Rule of Saint Benedict. “Proper honor must be shown to all, especially to those who share our faith’ (Gal. 6:10) and to pilgrims,” the Rule states.

GUEST INSTRUCTIONS

✦ It is best to arrive between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you come later than 8 pm contact the guest master to make arrangements to get to your room.

✦ The monks warmly invite you to join the monastic community in choir for communal prayer by taking a place in the choir stalls nearest the nave (body of the church). However, we kindly ask that you participate in a softer voice, blending with the monks as the prayers are being recited or sung. Listen to the monks closest to you for clues. Please allow the monks to guide the volume and pace in song and spoken word, keeping the volume of your voice down.

✦ Guests are free to walk in front of the monastery. The area behind the monastery building is a private cloister area, restricted to monks only.

✦ Guests should dress appropriately when attending communal prayer, Eucharist, and meals (long pants, shirts, shoes, and socks). Shorts and bare feet are not appropriate in the church. In the monastic dining hall, shorts, bare feet, and sandals without socks are not appropriate as well. Shorts are only allowed when going out to exercise.

✦ Silence for the purpose of prayer and reflection is observed every morning until after breakfast and in the evenings after Compline. We also observe silence on Friday from Vespers until after breakfast on Saturday. Please use a low voice in the monastery hallways.

✦ Please be on time for meals. All meals are taken in silence except for lunch and supper on Sundays and Solemnities.

✦ Guests are welcome to help themselves to coffee and purified water in the guest lounge. WI-FI connection is available.

✦ Smoking is not permitted in any of the buildings.

✦ No pets are allowed in the monastery.

✦ Priests wishing to Concelebrate are asked to bring an alb.

Saint Joseph Abbey recommends scheduling your stay between Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon or Tuesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon. Alternate days can be discussed with the Guest Master.
