Concert to benefit Saint Joseph Abbey flood relief efforts

A concert to benefit Saint Joseph Abbey and Seminary College will take place Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, located at 105 Bonnabel Boulevard in Metairie. The concert is free to attend, but a freewill offering will be taken up to help flood recovery efforts at the Abbey, which was inundated by nearly two feet of water from the Bogue Falaya River in Covington on March 11th. Thirty-one buildings and structures suffered varying degrees of damage during the flood, including the Abbey Church, which reopened this past Father’s Day, June 19th.  Total cost of recovery for Saint Joseph Abbey and Seminary College is expected to exceed $30 million.

Watson Copeland, M.M., M.P.H., organist at the Abbey Church and Professor of Sacred Music at Saint Joseph Seminary College, will present an organ recital of the works of J.S. Bach, Louis Vierne, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, and Charles Ives. In addition, favorite hymns of the St. Joseph Seminary College seminarians will be sung during the recital.  The recital will end with an improvisation.
